How to Customise Modern SharePoint Sites and Pages



Editing Pages:

  • Open Page in Edit Mode:

  1. Navigate to the page you want to edit.

  2. Click on "Edit" at the top right of the page.

  • Add Web Parts:

  1. While in edit mode, click the "+" icon to add web parts to the page.

  2. Choose from a variety of web parts like "Text," "Image," "Quick Links," "Document Library," and more.

  • Customise Web Parts:

  1. Click on a web part to open its property pane.

  2. Configure settings such as layout, content, and appearance.



Using Section Layouts:

  • Add Sections:

  1. Click on the "+" icon at the bottom of the page or between sections to add a new section.

  2. Choose a section layout (one-column, two-column, three-column, etc.).

  • Customise Sections:

  1. Adjust the width and background of each section.

  2. Add web parts to different columns within a section for a structured layout.


Applying Themes:

  • Change Site Theme:

  1. Click on the "Settings" gear icon and select "Change the look."

  2. Choose a theme from the available options or click "Customise" to adjust colours and fonts.

  • Custom Themes:

  1. For a more tailored look, use the SharePoint Online Management Shell to upload and apply custom themes across your site collection.



Branding and Logos:

  • Site Logo:

  1. Go to "Site Settings" and click on "Title, description, and logo."

  2. Upload a new logo to personalise your site.

  • Header Layout:

  1. Under "Change the look," select "Header" to adjust the header layout and logo alignment.



Adding Navigation Links:

  • Edit Navigation:

  1. Go to "Site Settings" and select "Navigation."

  2. Add, edit, or remove links to customise your site navigation.

  • Mega Menu:

  1. For hub sites, configure the mega menu to organise links under dropdowns for better accessibility.



Configuring Hub Sites:

  • Registering Hub Sites:

  1. In the SharePoint admin centre, select "Active sites."

  2. Choose the site you want to register as a hub site and click "Register as hub site."

  • Associating Sites:

  1. Go to the site settings of the site you want to associate with the hub.

  2. Select "Hub site association" and choose the relevant hub site.



Using Modern Site Features:

  • Communication Sites: Ideal for sharing information broadly across an organisation.

  1. Create a communication site from the SharePoint home page.

  2. Use web parts like "Hero," "News," and "Events" to highlight important content.

  • Team Sites: Perfect for collaboration within a team.

  1. Create a team site with a Microsoft 365 group.

  2. Integrate with other Microsoft 365 services like Planner and OneNote for enhanced collaboration.



Managing Permissions:

  • SharePoint Permissions:

  1. Go to "Site Settings" and click on "Site permissions."

  2. Manage site owners, members, and visitors.

  • Custom Permission Levels:

  1. Create custom permission levels if the default ones do not meet your needs.

  2. Assign these custom levels to users or groups as necessary.



Leveraging Power Automate:

  • Automating Processes:

  1. Use Power Automate to create flows that automate repetitive tasks.

  2. Examples include approval workflows for documents or automated notifications for new items in a list.



Enhancing Search:

  • Custom Search Experience:

  1. Use the modern search experience to find content quickly.

  2. Customise search settings to improve relevance and accuracy.
